Tour de España 2012

This year’s tour concentrates on the central and southern regions but has a  similar form to last year’s. This time I’m going north-east to south-west: along the Pyrenees to Cabo de Higer near Irun/Hendaye then all the way down to Punta de Tárifa and a glance over the Straits to Morocco! And lots of bimbly bits in between of course!

My ‘method’ of basing myself at several locations and exploring these in details worked well, so that’s pretty much what I’ll be doing again. I might get some trail riding during the trip – certainly on the weekend of the Fiesta de San Juan, when I’m meeting up with my Spanish buddies from Club Maxitrail – but in general I’m loth to do too much on my own. But the bike is set up for trail riding so you never know!

I had planned to do quite a lot of wild camping and I’ll have to spend at least one night in a ditch somewhere to  keep a ‘date’. But this trip is going to be a bit shorter than I expected, about three weeks instead of four or five, so the nightly budget is eased somewhat.

One reason for curtailing the trip is that I’ve been invited by a participant of the HISS rally to join him at the Moto Club Piston classic bike rally in Santander at the beginning of October, so I can tag a trip along the Cantabrina coast along with that instead of going there in the summer.

As in last year’s trip I’ve made a Googlemap with the route in outline and I will be adding the actual routes when I’ve done them:
